A creative capital of Europe, here in NI we have a long history of talented people producing amazing things. Incredibly for such a small place NI (and Belfast in particular), at the end of the 19th Century it was both the ‘Linen Capital of the World’ and the ‘Shipyard of the World’. The Titanic, our most known ship, was one of thousands of ships that came out of Belfast from 1850-1920. We also housed one of the world’s largest rope works. The ‘Made in NI’ stamp is historical, carries the DNA of the generations of our folk who grafted and innovated, and is recognised as a mark of quality around the world.
As the world evolved, we evolved. In the exact same spot where the Titanic was built stands the Innovation Centre of the Northern Ireland Science Park, the heart of our Silicon Valley bang in the middle of Belfast. In Commercial Court, Belfast’s original Commercial quarter from the 1600’s, start-ups sit alongside established companies and progressive charities. Around NI we have global and artisan businesses innovating side by side.
We have a thriving Food & Drink industry. The key brands of Tayto, Moy Park and Dale Farm fly the flag for NI overseas whilst the artisan producers like Suki Tea and Shortcross Gin sit on the sharp end of product innovation – Suki Tea daring to grow tea plants in Portaferry! Being such a small place ‘Farm to Fork’ works well in NI (you’re only 2 hours from where anything has been grown, reared, farmed or caught), meaning our local food markets are thriving and demand for local produce is met by a healthy supply.
Another sector with historical roots, Arts & Craft, has never been stronger. A visit to Studio Souk and you’ll see #artisanNI in action. With markets all over NI and an appetite to shop local to support our artisan producers, it’s a sector full of thriving start-ups.
Add to this engineering, manufacturing, bespoke product development, aerospace … #madeinNI is our shop window to the world. It’s our showcase for everything that is great that originates from here. So stop by and check us out!
